The 2024 FIRST Global Challenge in Athens, Greece, themed 'Feeding the Future,' presented unique challenges focused on agricultural technology and food security - issues close to Kenya's heart as an agricultural nation.

The Challenge

The game required robots to simulate various agricultural processes: planting seeds, managing irrigation, harvesting crops, and optimizing resource distribution. It was a complex challenge that demanded both mechanical precision and strategic thinking.

Our team approached the challenge by drawing inspiration from Kenyan farming innovations. We studied local solutions to agricultural challenges and incorporated those insights into our robot design and strategy.

What We Learned

While we didn't place on the podium in Athens, the experience was invaluable. We learned crucial lessons about robot reliability, alliance communication, and adapting strategy mid-competition. Our mechanical design performed well, but software issues during critical matches taught us the importance of thorough testing.

"Athens taught us that success isn't just about technical excellence - it's about resilience, adaptability, and learning from setbacks. These lessons directly contributed to our silver medal in Panama."

Team Captain, Reflecting on the Journey

We also formed lasting friendships with teams from Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa. These connections led to knowledge-sharing partnerships that continue today, with teams exchanging design ideas and best practices.

Cultural Exchange

Beyond competition, Athens offered incredible cultural experiences. We explored ancient Greek sites, learned about the history of democracy and philosophy, and shared Kenyan culture with teams from around the world. Our traditional dance performance at the cultural night was a highlight.

Team members visited agricultural research centers in Greece and met with local farmers, gaining perspective on how different countries approach food security. These insights broadened our understanding of global agricultural challenges.

Path to Improvement

After Athens, we conducted a thorough review of our performance. We identified specific areas for improvement: software testing protocols, driver training procedures, and alliance communication strategies. We implemented new practices based on these lessons.

The team also worked on building mental resilience and handling pressure better. We brought in sports psychologists and practiced competition scenarios to prepare for high-stakes moments.

Looking back, Athens 2024 was a crucial stepping stone. The experience, lessons learned, and growth we underwent as a team directly contributed to our historic silver medal performance in Panama 2025. Every challenge we faced in Athens prepared us for greater success.
